Growing up in a Christian family, I always went to a local church with my family. When we moved from state to state, and again I was young and went where my parents thought best for us to call our place of worship.

While in college (I did my studies online), I was still under my father’s leading and went where he went. My family eventually made the switch from one church to another and I followed suit.

After my marriage, we continued to be committed to the local church where we met (and where my parents were) until I accepted a position as a Youth Minister in IL.

I share this, because I have never had to find a church merely on my own…

What Do I Look For In a Church

How important is music? Does the size of the church matter? Should we just go where all our friends and family go? How do I lead my family to the right Church?
I am currently in search for a Church where my family and I will call our church home. Where we can be committed to one another and grow in Jesus.  But again, what should I look for?
1. Biblical Teaching

What does this mean exactly? Am I being fed spiritually? Is my family being taught the Word? Am I being pointed to Jesus or is it a moralistic self-help message? Does the message glorify Jesus as the main point? Does he allow Scripture to set his preaching agenda, or does he pick topics by some other criteria? (2 Tim. 2:15, 4:2-2)”–9Marks

Will I be discipled? Will my family?

2. Can I Use My Gifts

I am not referring to natural talent, but gifts God has given to me to maximize His kingdom. Can I use them to bless others and further Christ’s church?

3. Proper Doctrine

Does the Church confess proper biblical doctrine where I can say, “Yes, this is true.” In what areas do I disagree? Is the disagreement preference or is it a serious doctrine issue?

Some issues, such as End Times, some may be able to look past, as long as they do not require me to agree to such views to join the church, I can submit to the church leaders.

4. Church Membership

Does the Church practice Church Membership? With this, comes church discipline. Does the church practice church discipline when a member remains in sin?

5. Church Leadership

Does the church lead well? Are the men qualified to lead? Can I submit to them in their leadership?
